Stormhoek Sauvignon Blanc 2004
What I really want to talk about in this post is the innovative way this south african winery is marketing their wine.
In a word, or two, Geek Dinners. Or more precisely, 100 of them, one a day for 100 days in the good ol’ US of A. Stormhoek supply the wine for the dinners, and in return they ask for bloggers to blog their thoughts and upload pictures of the event to the Stormhoek Flickr group - not much to ask for in return for free booze.
Good to know though, Stormhoek first brought the idea of geek dinners to UK, with events in London and Cumbria.
But back to the USA. The type of group now not only includes geeks, but also “musicians, mathematicians, actors, explorers and would you believe, nudists”.
It seems anyone who wants to host a dinner can apply, although Stormhoek have indicated this is not an opportunity for corporate type bashes. It seems they want genuine groups of individuals who are bloggers.
What a great way for a winery to spread the word about its wine. Stormhoek say they are not one of the big boys, with the bucks to go for big budget ad campaigns, and I for one wish them every success with this promotional campaign - after-all it takes guts to give your product away and ask the public to comment on it. Mind you, I don’t think they have too much to worry about having tried it this evening myself.
