My wife prefers the cheaper Asda Soave at about £2.58 a bottle, but I disagree.

While I was grabbing a couple of videos to watch last night, I nipped across Blockbuster’s car park to pickup something cheap ‘n cheerful. Coming under the label of Sainsbury’s ‘Basics’ this Vino de Mesa £2.23 red has a blend of unspecified Spanish grapes.

Loire whites have been a long time favourite of mine, so when a friend brought this bottle round and gave it to me I was delighted to take it off his hands. I wasn’t disappointed.

From the Asda “Extra Special” range this Masa Gua Pinot Grigio is well worth the £5.99 price tag.
It’s crisp and clean, with delicious citrus flavours. And it’s very drinkable, belying its 13.5% strength.
If I had to criticise it it would only be to wish the after-taste lingered a slightly longer.
